Upgrading to 3.0.7 from 2.2.9

I'd like to know if there is a painless method to make this upgrade, all the while carrying over all my registered users, all forums, and all threads, etc..

ie.. not lose anything (apart from some of the hacks)

The new ver is just one directory higher than the current ver, and they both share the same mysql database.

Hints?

Just use the upgrade script, its about as painless as it gets.

First, make sure that you make a backup of your database prior to upgrading... it's critical you do that just in case something goes wrong.

After you make a backup, upload all of the new vBulletin 3 files, then run http://your.site/forums/install/upgrade.php and just keep on clicking 'Next' on the upgrade script and you shouldn't have any problems! (You'll probably click the next button 70-80 times throughout the entire script)

backups done etc.. My forums have a custom design, and I want to make sure things go smooth.

quickly though... I am installing/upgrading to a higher directory.
When I commence the upgrade, will it have any effect on the current board?

ie.. will it make changes to the mysql db along the way that may affect the way my board is currently running?

After installation of all the new files, I go to /install/upgrade.php and I get re-directed to admincp/index.php

back to the drawing board.

I don't understand this.

What I'm doing is a test upgrade in a higher directory.
So I took my entire board and copied it to that directory.
Then I uploaded VB 3.0.7 to that directory as per the instructions found here: http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/upgrade

That's where I'm at. When I hit upgrade.php I get a warning that install.php needs to be deleted, so I do that, and then when I try again I get re-directed to the new admincp.

This means there is nothing to upgrade. The script determined this database is already at the version used by the vB scripts you have installed.

I install a full new version of 3.0.7 in a higher directory, and I configure the settings to how I want them. I don't add any new forums yet.

Can I import my forums, users, etc.. from my version 2.2.9 ?

You could do this - or you could just upgrade since that is the preferred path.

Preferred path? I'm not sure I understand what that means.

In any case, I'll install a fresh copy of 3.0.7 to a higher directory and play with it to see if I can import all the data from my current board.

Its what we recomend, doing an import will take longer and be more cumbersome, than just upgrading.

The upgrade never worked, and now... the impex gave me error after error.
So here's where I am. I can't even log in to my new version of VB as admin.
Wrong password over and over.

I'm quite fed up at this point and I guess I am to stay at VB2.
