Changing the appearance of the navbar

I want to change the size/appearance of the navbar (e.g. this) to something that resembles a navigation menu, rather than a navbar, somthing like this. Would I need to do this via a new template/HTML coding, or can I adjust something in the templates to achieve this? I don't mean the colours etc, what I mean is the shape of the navigation menu.

Sort of an opened ended question, I can't give you an exact awnser as differnt people use differnt methods.

Is it possible to get the navbar into that layout? Yes. but you would need to know html rather well.
