How do I change thread_new.gif and forum_new_.gif for different styles

I went into Forumhome and Forumdisplay and changed the name of forum_new.gif and thread_new.gif, to forum_new****.gif and thread_new****.gif and named the new icons but nothing seemed to happen....I know that changes the icons because I replaced the stock ones with my own but I cannot seem to change them per style, without changing them globally for all styles......
Any suggestions...??

There are a list of folders, you can redefine folders for new styles
AdminCP > Styles & Templates > Style Manager > style vars (from the drop down) > Image paths
