I'm trying to add two pictures to a post. I'd like them to appear in the body of the message, but would take appearing as a link. Right now, I go into manage attachments, browse to the files, and select upload. Everything seems to work there. When I view the message, nothing's there; no image or link appears. I'm probably missing something simple. I do have the user group permission set to allow uploading files.

Even without attachment viewing permissions, there should still be a link to the attachment (which generates a "no permission" page).
This could be a style problem, or even a file problem. Try creating a new default style and uploading the original PHP files. Then see if you still have the problem.
If you continue to have problems, then submit a support ticket and we can take a look.
