rebuild search index fails

I upgraded from Vb2 to Vb3. When I try to rebuild the search index I can do about 5000 posts before if stops.
If it stops at post 5102 should I rebuild it again and choose to start from post 5103? Will this work? (there are about 110,000 posts so this could take forever...)
I have it set to do 250 per page and then use the javascript to auto to next page. Is this setting correct?

I've seen this on servers that run out of memory. Just continue rebuilding it from the place it left off. You may need to do this a lot of times before the rebuild is complete.

OK. I did that until I reached the end. Seems to be ok.

For the next step I did the 'rebuild similar threads'. This reached 347 and then just stopped. Does this mean I reached the end or did the server run out of memory or something? How do I know if it was actually finished?

Yes, that sounds like the same problem. The server is running out of memory. You'll need to do the same thing. You can see how many thread ids need to be processed by looking at the total number of records in the thread table with phpMyAdmin.

There is only an option for:
'Number of threads to process per cycle'. I left it at the default 100.

How do I select where to start processing from then?

Yeah, you're tight. Unfortunately there is no option to begim where you left off on rebuilding similar threads.

Since it would appear the server is timing out, the best option would be to fix the server. Is this a dedicated server and do you have root access, or is this a shared server?

can you provide info asked at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=70117 or post a thread in server config forum with that info ? tweaking my.cnf mysql settings and memory buffer allocation specific for searchindex rebuilding or such intensive tasks as yours can help dramatically

Ummm.... it's a shared server at futurequest.net
Don't believe I can change a thing on it.... MySql 4.0.21, php 4.3.10, apache 1.3.33

I'm beta testing 3.0.5 to decide if I should upgrade from 2.x. The 2.x is live but 3.0.5 is behind the scenes so I'm the only user currently.

The archive function also doesn't work. (gives a 404 error) But I guess that's a topic for a different thread.

Is there anything that can be done?

Could get web host to provide the server info and read this thread and tune their entire server for them hehe

I see that the similar threads form doesn't have one. If I were to modify the form to include a 'startat' value would it work? I ask because it seems the form data gets posted to : /admincp/misc.php In there the similiar threads secions includes a $startat variable but I'm not sure where it comes from. If I pass the value in the form as I wrote above (let's say the value 348 since it crashed at 347) would it work?

There is no way the host is changing anything. I WANT this feature because it's awesome and my users will benefit. I need some solution.

And for the record, I got the archive function to work.

For reference, the above worked. Why not include it in 3.0.6? It's only 1 line of code. Searching this forum shows others have the same problem.
