Is there really no way to display a text area custom profile field in the members list?
    Thanks.

Yes, there is. It's all custom fields or or none:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> User Listing & Profile Viewing -> Member List Field Options -> Custom Fields (check)

Thanks but as far as I can see, this only applies to text 'fields' not text areas (multiple lines). Or am I wrong?

I haven't tested this out but if you enabled it and it doesn't show, then it would appear there really is no way to do this without hacking.

I figured out a way to do it for my board.

You need to go to to PHP admin and look at the specific record for the text-area custom user field that you want to appear in the members list. You then change the column (I think from a 1 to a 0) that indicates whether it appears in your members list.
