      no i dont mind the guests..

      right now i have register disabled.. i would however like it to be enabled however requiring a password to be given while registering for the forum so that the application will be processed. if there is no password or if the password is wrong then the application is not processed.

      know what i mean?

        Select MODERATED REGISTRATION. Folks register but have no privileges until the staff approves of their membership. They can be accepted or denied entrance. That will accomplish what you want.

          that is true as well and i did have it like that for a while however i stopped wanting users being added to the database then having to go in and out.. and sometimes i would auth them all by mistake and that was a mess - i want them to have to talk request the password so i can weed them out 1st..

          know what im saying?

            That will most likely require hacking.

            Could it be done with htaccess?

              Yes, it can be done with htaccess by htaccessing the 'register.php' file, that way people trying to register will receive a prompt for a username and pass (not forum username)

                    I found a javascript that can be used for this here-- http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/cut76.shtml

                    I believe it would involve making a new template, having the register button direct to that template, then having the "button" take you to the registration page. I could probably work it through, but I'm pretty sure someone else could work through it faster than I could... any takers?

                          use this:

                          Code:
                          <Files register.php>
                          AuthType Basic
                          AuthName "Registration Password Required"
                          AuthUserFile /full/path/to/user/file
                          Require valid-user
                          </Files>
