  • Unread threads changing on their own to read

I swear I saw this somewhere before, but could not find it now that it is affecting me.

A lot of my users are complaining that when they log in, they see a bunch of new posts, then say they don't have a chance to read them, and go on break, and come back, all the ones that were unread are now marked as read even though they didn't read them.

    Has anyone else encountered this?

This is normal. The thread read markings are based on sessions. If they allow their session to end, the read marks will be reset.

So there's no way to change it so say, if they're on vacation for a week, when they come back, they don't have to hunt for the stuff they've missed?

If they've been gone for a week, then the next time they login all the new posts since their last visit will be marked unread.

But what if they didn't log out, but have just been inactive? Is a possible solution to this for them to log out each time?

If they are not active then their session times out as per the cookie timeout setting.

Ok. So there's no way to change it from cookie time out, to when they actually enter the thread that it's marked read?

Thanks Steve, I appreciate your patience while I soak all this in.

Sorry I don't understand the question. When they read a thread it is marked as read.

No, when they haven't read a thread, after the cookie times out, it's being shown as read even though they have never actually opened that thread, and I understand that's what you intended. But I'm asking (and it could be a tall order) is there anyway to make a change so that the thread never shows as read until they either mark the forum as read, or open the thread.

Yes, that is currently the way it works and the way vBulletin has always worked. Changing this would require some significant custom coding. You can try asking about this over at vbulletin.org but I don't recall any hacks that do this.
