  • E-mail Manager Issues

I have just upgraded to 3.0.1, I'm also with a new host. On my old host and using 2.2.5 I was able to send e-mails without a hitch. On my new host, I cannot send more than like 10 at a time. That just will not do. I get the following error message.

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

I'm at a loss here, any idea?
    Thanks,

To add on to that sending 10 at a time, I did not get through the first 100 users sending 10 at a time before getting the error above.

10 at a time? How do you know that?

      First try this:

Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Server Settings and Optimization Options -> Enable "-f" Parameter -> Yes

Then try the vB email functions. If it still doesn't work, then try the email diagnostics in the Admin CP and report back the results:

Admin CP -> Imports & Maintenance -> Diagnostics -> Email

        Steve,
I say 10 because I worked my way down from the standard 500 to 250, 150, 100, 50, 25, 20 and then 10. All resulted in off the bat error messages after a pause except for 10. Sending 10 did work, but the error message still occured within the first 100 users, ie. 8 "next pages" or so.

Ok, I enabled the -f option. I also noticed
Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Server Settings and Optimization Options ->Number of Emails to Send Per Batch is set to 10 (is this related somehow?)

This did not seem to help. I tried sending to 100 and 50, same error page.

I already did the e-mail test and it seems to be fine. According to the text all should be fine, ie. it is formatted correctly and was sent.

This is what is listed in my PHP info for sendmail, I'm not sure if that helps any or not. /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i

This has got to be a server issue then. There really isn't anything vB can do to speed up or fix the way your server processes email. I suggest contacting your host about this.

After sending this to my host, this is the reply I received.

Unfortunately I can't help at this point because it is 3rd party software.

            Respectfully,

            Steve J.

I'm lost at this point, is this a cop out? This is the only reply I have from them aside from "where did the error occur" and "can we have a login for the control panel?"

That's a copout on their part. This is a mail server issue. It is not adequately processing PHP mail. Who is your host?

I was re-editing and put "cop out" in, I thought it pertinent to mention they had done nothing or sent me nothing of substance. I'm not reading very good things on them.... but any host name searched with "sucks" on Google tend to be that way.

Back on topic... my host is Aplus.net What does one do at this point, if anything.

(I would hate to move the site)

I don't know of anything you can do without the cooperation of your host, and clearly they refuse to do this. Sorry.

I'm in my 30 day grace period with them, so I'm going to tighten the screws if I can. The first email will be a volley of sorts. I may be a little off in my email, because of my ignorance in this area, but we will see. Maybe I should toss in "because Steve said so".

Can you tell me what you found or why the third party software is to blame? Should the server and php mail function be able to handle sending mail to say 100 people at a time? Do I need to be using the -f option with sendmail? On my old host I would send up to 500 at time w/out a glitch. At the present it appears 10 is pushing the limits. What server error messages if any were logged as a result of this? The more I look at it the more it looks like server side configuration/performance issues.
                    Thanks,

                    Dave

                      Just a thought...

Perhaps check your max execution time set as shown in phpinfo. It may be very small.

Good luck getting your host to change it. Drop an uncooperative host like a hot potato. They will kill you. There are tons of great ones out there, hungry for good business.

I'm making changes to the email manager in the next release which will allow you to stop and start mailing as well as use an external SMTP server.

The max execution is set to 15. Is this low, hi, should be OK??

Scott, sounds like a good change. When exactly is this release.

I will give the host a few days, otherwise it looks like I'm moving. I'm also backing up daily... just in case.

That is pretty low. The default setting is '30' which is what I have on my server and I am easily able to send out 400 emails at a time from my forums. However it also depends on how busy the server is. It may be that they have you on a server that is over-subscribed.

Because this is a shared hosting plan the setting will not be able to be changed as this will effect the entire server.

                              Thank you for choosing Aplus.net.
I'm not sure if they agreed that could be the problem or not. Previously it was the "3rd Party Software". Because of this, I will be looking for a new host. I'm toying with www.asmallorange.com and www.powweb.com
