    First question;
    Admin Control Panel > Styles & Templates > Style Manager > from the drop down behind your style, click on 'Add child style'. Then change the specific style colors, images you want. Then goto the Admin Control Panel > Forums & Moderators > Forum Manager > and edit the forum you want the different style to apply to, now select to override users choice and save the forum.

    Second question;
    Admin Control Panel > Usergroups > Usergroup Manager > Edit the usergroup you want to give HTML Markup to. There are 2 fields there for HTML markup, the left and the right. This is the place to enter html code to surround the username. You could add something like this to make the name bold, dark green and use a picture.

    Code:
    left markup field : <strong><font color="#006600">
    right markup field : </font></strong><img border=0 src="supermod.gif" />

              If you edit templates, try to understand what it does and what its position in the whole page is. You can add xhtml to them yes.

              Check the http://www.vBulletin.com/docs/html online manual for version 3 of vbulletin for style manager / color maps / etc that explain how to use it and what is referenced to what.

                  XML is not xhtml.

                  But if you want an example:

                  If you want to add the text HAHAHA to the header of each page, edit the 'header' template and add in the place where it says <!-- place banner code here --> "<div> HAHAHA </div>" and save the template.

                        I do not quite follow you.

                        The main forum (forumhome/index.php) only shows 1 default style, and users (if set) can pick alternative setup.

                        Clicking on a forum will show the set style for users when the permission is set to override their choice.

                            That is something different ..

                            You can control that using a dynamic image in the forumhome_level1_nopost template.

                            <img border="0" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/category_$forumid.gif" />

                            If your category is 15, make a image with category_15.gif and upload it to images/misc/ and it will then show.
