  • Different pics in each forum?

    I know I can put an image on every page via the header - and I know I can have a different colour/image on the index. But is it possible to have a different pic in each forum? Is this a hack job or can it be done by fiddling around with conditionals? No idea what they are really but if it's a case of "if condition is forum X=image source blah de blah" could that do it?

    Fingers crossed!

    Thanx

      I am not sure if the header template will have the forumid value for that forum, but .. if so you can use something like this:

      <img border="0" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/forum_$forumid.gif" />

        No, I'm talking background pictures. On my current forums every single page has a background picture via the header, like this. It's always there no matter what the page is. The index I just put a black bg color in the body and it got overrode there.

        My new board will be TV shows in general and not just one. Could do a pic with images from all the shows but that might be a bit fussy. Be much cooler if you could click in a forum for say 'American Idol' and a pic relevant to that was in the background. And when you went in say the West Wing forum there would be a west wing pic in the background. Each forum showing a different background.

        I am not sure if the header template will have the forumid value for that forum, but .. if so you can use something like this:

        <img border="0" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/forum_$forumid.gif" />--Floris
        Wouldn't the header put it everywhere though? I'd just want it to be kept to that specific forum and not in any other pages, so a different forum could have a different background. I know it wasn't possible on V2x but I had the wild idea that conditionals might somehow do the magic trick.

        Needless to say I'll be giving it a shot!

        Thanx.

          If you mean the background.

          You can make one parent forum which is default for all your forums, and then child forums with only a different background for the forums that have this set to override user choice. Now you will load that forum and it will show a different background.

            I've read that twice and I think I know what you are driving at. Do you mean a Style? My users don't have any choice in styles and backgrounds, they get what they are given, so I don't have to overide anything they've set.

            I have a vague concept of styles, but I'll certainly be eager to learn them if this could do the trick!

            Thanx

              You can set them visible, but not allow users to pick a style. Just goto the forum and select a style for that forum and click on 'override user choice'. This should work, you could check the online manual for details on forum permissions, setup and inheritance and styles, etc.

                Oh...oh..<hops up and down with excitement>

                So I'd merely duplicate..what the forum display?...and save this as a style, and upload it as say Style A. Ditto for all my forums - probably about 10 of them. And each forum would be set to use the relevant 'style'?

                I wouldn't have to upload all the templates for each style would I - don't want 10+ duplicates on the server, just 10+ copies of the forum display where I'd have a different pic in each one?

                How would I get the styles to know to choose the default templates except for the forum display one, whwre in that instance they'd choose A,B,C etc. Is there a tutorial on Styles somewhere?

                I'm getting all excited now!

                  In the admin control panel > styles & templates > style manager
                  you have your styles there.
                  the default style you already use for your forum, you can select from the drop down box to add a child style. it will now inherit all the changes made to parent (saves you work) and the child style, modify that to have a different background. You can repeat this for all the forums you want.

                  When done, goto the forums & moderators section > forum manager and edit the forum you want to have a different background for, now select the style for that forum to use and check the option : override users choice.

                  You should be set now.

                      Me again.

                      That all worked beautifully btw, so thanks.

                      But.........

                      On my current board I overode the background image on the forum index page by putting a < body bgcolor="#000000" > (minus spaces of course) in the body tag of the forumhome template. This worked a treat, got a plain black background come up immediately, only on that page.

                      Doesn't appear to work on this board, the Main CSS keeps getting called. I've put an extra style in the forumhome template:
                      //<style>
                      //body {
                      //background:#000000;
                      //}
                      //</style>

                      I've tried this after the body tag, before, in the header, before and after the header/headinclude. It does work (depending where it's positioned) but not straight away. The background picture loads and only after that does it turn black. Obviously I need to call it before the Main CSS, but doesn't appear to work. Even put it before the head tags but the black didn't appear at all. So I can get it working but I need it to work quicker so the pic isn't appearing at all.

                      Scratching my head on this one.

                      Thanx!
