  • The new breed of Porn Spammers

Just thought I would bring this discussion back up since it's only been discussed here a little bit.

There is a New Breed of Porn Spammers out there who now register on your site and will cycle through your memberlist automatically spamming your members.

A trickle of sites are starting to get hit (mine included) and it will escalate into a BIG PROBLEM SOON.

    What solutions can be used?

I know their are a few hacks on vbulletin.org but none are tried and tested yet?

Turning off all email features on a board works but it is a real cruddy way and it punishes your regular users.

Using the form box to send emails does not work since the spammers have seemed to have found away around it.

Although vbulletin is actively working on the final release of vbulletin and other problems can some kind of email floodcheck or something be released as a patch in the meantime for those of us who cannot upgrade for awhile.

I know the staff here is busy but this is an issue that should be discussed before it grows into a larger problem.

Please remember awhile ago when porn spammers started to hit sites, it started as a trickle and then become a huge problem.

Any solutions or input from the vbulletin staff on this would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Mike

No they register and follow up with the activation and then hit the list.

Of course I mean I could moderate new members but it's a time consuming process and even then you still could get tricked.

I know somone is going to say "report them" however most accounts are coming from Russia and you know how International laws apply there.

If registrations are now done manually i think this opens up a number of new problems asides from the `e-mail user` system being abused. If it's possible to write a script which can spam existing threads with replies, or send emails to users, surely it won't be long until one is written which can PM users. So long as you untick the `save a copy` box there's more or less no limit on them either. Not looking too good really

vB3 does have an email flood check though, and this is also true for PMs Image verification sounds like a good idea, but i do wonder how far it will go. Just about every system could be abused with enough effort (such as PMs)

This is true but until those problems arise.....

Another idea I thought of if it's possible that instead of using members numbers like 1,2,3...etc..that it could be enabled by name.

Example...to mass flood right now all you have to do is following the leader.

                forum/member.php?s=&action=mailform&userid=1
                forum/member.php?s=&action=mailform&userid=2
                forum/member.php?s=&action=mailform&userid=3

If the numbers where unassigned and it went by the username or something that would be more of a deterrent.

                forum/member.php?s=&action=mailform&userid=John
                forum/member.php?s=&action=mailform&userid=Paul
                forum/member.php?s=&action=mailform&userid=Ringo

Anything that makes it tougher to automate is good in my book.
