Is it possible to allow supermods access to the cp without them being able to move themselves to that admin group and run backups etc. basically take over the site if they get the urge? We the admins want them to be able to move members and edit user status's but at the same time we don't want to risk being locked out of our own site. Help please.

Supermods can Moderate every single forum. They cant access the AdminCP, They can only access the ModCP. I think this option is only available in vB3.

You can give supermods power to access the admincp though, edit user groups and give them access. This can be done in vB2. But make sure you trust them before giving them access

No. this is not possible without hacking. Supermods with Admin CP access have the same privileges as Admins.

...in vB2. In vB3 you can assign custom permissions per admin.

            We're running Version 2.3.0 so I guess it'll take a hack correct?

Yes, You might want to look at the Hack "Lesser Admin CP". Search for it.
