  • webcrawlers??

The other day, a member of my board informed me that someone (or something) was accessing the site in a strange way. This was a "guest" and it was looking through the member profiles, trying to retrieve passwords, etc. It's there right now if fact. Yesterday, there were 10 or more from this block of IP numbers at the same time.

Could this be something looking for e-mail addresses? I checked one of the IP numbers and this is what it found:

    http://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?...t=66.196.72.66

It mentions that there are webcrawlers??? What is that exactly?

My board is at: http://www.348-409.com/forum/index.php?s= If you look at "who's online" your bound to see it for yourself.

    Thanks for any help,

    Bob

Webcrawlers (spiders.. bots) are programs sent out by search engines such as Inktomi/Yahoo, Googel et.al... they crawl the forum, take information for indexing your site, & hopefully add your site to the listings on search engines.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance

Thank you! I was a bit worried as I thought it was something trying to do harm or steal e-mail addresses. I just found a few other posts here discussing with the exact same thing. (same IP numbers too)

      I'll just ignore it then.

      Thanks,

      Bob
