Purpose of Updating this?

I have been reading and researching threads here but I can not fully understand this. What purpose does "updating counters" serve?

I have seen a few threads posted here about counter errors occuring while admins try to update those counters. Why do they need to be updated?

If you prune old posts from a particular forum (I do it on my for sale/wanted forum) it's cool to be able to update the counters so the post counts on the board and that forum are accurate.
