    That's not really a reliable method for large databases. You should use SSH or Telnet. (see my link above)

    I did it via the Admin CP, using the back up tables option.

    I have just done a back of my database for the first time. The database is 380MB big, but the backup only appears to be just over 70MB. Does this sound right to you. I assume some kind of high level compression is performed on the backup sql file?
