Upgrading from 2.0.1 to latest version

Can I upgrade directly from 2.0.1 to the current 2.2.7? Or do I have to install every version that happened in between?

Where are the instructions for upgrade? I know I saw them earlier, but can't find them now.

Also, where is the information on paying vBulletin to upgrade for me?

Why would you want to upgrade to 2.2.7? That is an old version and is not downloadable from the Members Area anymore. In answer to your other question, go here: http://www.vbulletin.com/order

If your licence is still active and your access to the members area has not expired, download 2.3.0 from the members area.

Back up your database and then upload the files to your server in ASCII overwriting all files, close your board, then run all of the upgrade scripts upto and including upgrade23.php.

If you follow those instructions then you won't have to pay vbulletin the extra installation fee.

If you still want jelsoft to do it for you, the information is found on the order page, I think the current cost is $135.

On this page: http://www.vbulletin.com/members/upgrade.html it says at the bottom of the page Upgrading will not overwrite any of your custom templates. If you have customized any template that is listed as 'modified' in the announcement, we seriously recommend using the 'revert' option to return them to the default template, then re-applying your customizations.

Does "modified in the announcement" mean this: When I'm in the Control Panel and click on Templates | Edit, then "show all", the templates that show in blue are the ones I've changed. Is it saying they recommend changing all those back to the original?

Geez, that's overwhelming. I've probably customized around 40% of the templates, some of them fairly majorly. Check out my Forum if you like and it doesn't look much like the original: http://forum.portraitartist.com. Or is "modified" different than "customized?"

So then why does it say "Upgrading will not overwrite any of your custom templates?" This is confusing.

I know I could do those customizations faster than the first time because I knew nothing then. But, it's still a lot of work, as I'm sure you can tell if you looked at my forum. It would certainly take days to do.

And, before 3 beta came out, new versions of 2 were coming out regularly. As a very busy business person already working 12-16 hours a day, I don't have time to keep putting the customizations back in with every new version.

However, whenever I post a question and say I'm still at 2.0.1, I'm told I should upgrade. And, I figure eventually there will be no support for my version.

But, everything works pretty well at this point (just no one could ever help me solve why the "quote" button stopped working...even when I reverted to the original template, but that's another story).

The default templates (they will be in blue if modified) will be changed. Why not save the modified templates code in something like Microsoft Word? That way, you can quickly modify the templates again

Well, that would be faster than doing everything from scratch. Let's see, a quick count and I come up with 154 templates to save.

Well, honestly Joe, I can find a lot more productive and fun things to do with my time than reinstall all my vBulletin customizations. I guess there's something to be said for not customizing a lot. But, my site has a reputation for being classy and I would have disappointed some of my clients to put up a forum that didn't match the rest of my site.

But, what about the security risks that I'm warned about by the developers when they've sent out upgrade notices in the past and during posts I have made in the past? And, won't I eventually not have access to any support?

The other thing is that I periodically think about setting up my forum so that one has to have a password to access it at all and after a certain number of guest visits, has to pay (with PayPal) or lose access. I would set up memberships that expired in a year, so I knew when someone was supposed to pay again. I asked about this in another post and someone said these features are in 3.

I was thinking about starting earlier in the day, but I put it off while this thread was going and now it's a bit late in the day to start.

However, not knowing what I was doing, I entered http://forum.portraitartist.com/upgrade1.php. When it brought up the page, it told me the forum had been automatically closed because I was getting ready to run a script. I wish I'd been asked first because I just wanted to look.

I didn't run the script and got out of that page. I went into admin and set the "Turn Your vBulletin on and off" to "no." I was then able to see the forum again.

However, one of my moderators is saying she still sees the message that the board is closed. I've had her click refresh button, but apparently to no avail. She's the only one so far. I'm going to send an email to all my moderators and see if anyone else is having that problem. I can see it fine. Can you? http://forum.portraitartist.com

What might her problem be?

Duhhh, it was showing for me because I'm logged on and am the administrator. Well, I had "turn forums on and off" set to a "no." Switched it back to a "yes" and logged off. Should be ok now. Could you please check.
