    A few backup questions

Using Telnet, to connect to a "Sun Cobalt Linux" server, how do I do the following for a successful backup...
    1. What's the command to change to Root directory?
    2. Once I do change to my Root directory, how do I determine the path to my "dump.sql"...in other words, path to my vB database sql files and data?
    3. Once I dump my sql, what's the command I need to use to transfer the dump.sql file to my own local computer?
Furthermore, do I need to have Root access permission to backup my database using Telnet? Because, I don't beleive I have Root access permission.

Thank you in advance for your help.

1 & 2. It's easier to just change to the directory containing your backup. To do this:

    cd directoryname

    3. You can use FTP for this.

No, you do not need root access to make a db backup.

      Thank you Steve.

      Backup went smooth using putty/telnet.

One last question regarding this now:

Let's say that I have dump.sql somewhere on the server. To restore my database using this dump.sql, would I be using this command:

        mysql -uUSERNAME -p newdbname < /path/to/dump.sql

Or is this only used when moving server?

In other words. What command should I use to Restore a corrupt database using my dump.sql file which is a backup of my database before it went bad.

        Thank you again in advance.

Yes you use that command to restore the db, regardless of whether you're moving servers or restoring a backup.
