OK, dumb question time, how do I gzip my .sql dump file. I want to do this so I can then FTP to my server and FTP my database to my local PC?

    gzip backupfile.sql

Thanks Steve, so what would I type from within a SSH window?

At the command prompt. Make sure you are in the directory containing the backup file. Of course change the file name as well.

Thanks again, it's compressing a 185meg database down to 108meg using gzip -9 I assume this is about right, it also deletes the original .sql file but this is not a problem.

          Thanks
