Backing up your database

I think this is the right place to put this. My question is what is the best way to save the database and what is propose of updating countings and what does it do?

I've never updated the counters only once but it seeemed to casue a problem and the only way I have updated my board is through the ftp to save the forums in case anything happens so if anyone can tell me a better method of donig things I'd really appreciate it and thanks for any info on this

The only reliable method of backing up and restoring a database is with shell access via telnet or ssh. Please see the instructions here:

Normally it's not necessary to update counters unless you've changed a user name.

Is there some kinda script that you could cron that would dump it automatically?

You could run the mysqldump command in cron. I do this twice a day. You could also try this script:

Alright thanks for your help and the instructions it's really worth the effort then losing everything, actually my host did it for me as they had to move me to a new server which i'm glad they did so I guess it depends on your host too

With the above link will this update all of the posts to current status when you move from an old server to a new one when you have to wait for the DNS propagation to take place? In other words you lose posts when moving to a new server when waiting for the DNS to update.

It restores all the data (posts, etc.) to the exact same state they were in when the backup was made.

Yeah I beleive that is done in the phpmyadmin and sometimes certain hosts do it too for you
