  • Regular users browsing private forums

We have a staff-only forum on our site. Recently, we've had vB report that an individual (or 2 with closely-related usernames) was browsing the forum.

Checked the user's permissions and they're set correctly. Forum permissions are set correctly as well.

Any idea how a user could be getting around the normal permissions? Tried pasting a url with the forum number in it and got nowhere...

If your permissions are set correctly, and you confirmed this by pasting a private forum url into your browser, then you should be fine. How do you know these users were able to see the forum?

Are you saying that Who's Online showed them to be in these forums?

The online list shows a user's location... it doesn't account for forum permissions. Those users are viewing a "no permission" page. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

            Gotcha.

Of course, that doesn't explain how they can even see the private forum though...

It's either a search engine bot or someone going through the forumids.

It most often happens because someone with access to the forum sent a link to a thread in that forum to someone who doesn't have access. vB2 will show them in the forum when they really don't have access to it and can't see it. vB3 correctly tells you that they are trying to view the forum but are receiving permission denied.
