  • True Thread Archiving, Possibile Solutions?

    Facts:
    Site: http://www.ina-community.com/forums
    Posts: 2,172,901
    Members: 129,090

    Problem:
Of the 2 million posts slightly over 1 million of them are archived posts. Since vB doesn't actually "Archive" it is killing my servers.

    Solution:
I'm wondering if I could setup a brand new forum and import my archived threads. I'll then link them directly from the currently live forum and it will free up my database searches.

    Question:
What are my options? Is there a better alternative? A simpler one perhaps?

There is no vB to vB importer yet, so you would need to make a copy of your database, move it over to your "other" site, restore the backup database to a database on your "other" site, and delete everything but your archived forums and threads. Once your archive forums and up and running, you can delete the archived threads from your main site.

Ok do I need another license to do this since there won't be any "posting" going on in the second one?

Also we prune every 60 days or so, how would I continue to move these archived threads?

Yes. You would need a second license for this.

You can't. That would be a problem.

Just a question, but isn't the point of archiving threads so that they will be available to someone searching for the answer to a question or other information? If they won't be part of a search, what's the point in keeping them at all? If your problem is the extra load from searching the archives with every search, perhaps a better solution would be a separate table for archived posts and an option to search or not search the archive table in searches, and the forumdisplay would obviously ignore them unless the forum was specified as an archive forum for another forum. This would, of course, require some code hacking, however.

[edit]I posted this idea as a hack request on vBulletin.org, because I reallized that this is something I could use, too. If you are interested, the thread is here[/edit]
