  • Back-up controversy

I've heard it posted that when a mysqldump occurs, the database is locked and everything that was attempted to be written to the database during the dump is held in cue until the dump is complete. This makes it safe to do a mysqldump without shutting down the board first, which in turn makes it easier to back up automatically with cron because you don't also have to write a script to automatically shutdown the board first before cron runs the script to perform a database dump. My question is: Is this true or is this false. I would really love to use a script to automatically backup my database but I'm paranoid about corrupting the database if someone is trying to post during the dump. If anyone has any thoughts on the subject I would appreciate them very much. Thanks. JakeC
