Requires hacking (and really doesn't have anything to do with Dreamweaver); check out http://www.vbulletin.org/

Also $variables aren't replacements, they're variables. Replacements are usually in the format {replacementname}.

OK, variables, then. Is there a specific hack for this?

The best place to ask is at the hacking site - vbulletin.org.
