Problems with multiple registrations ..... Help!!

Why cant 2 users on my computer have their own names, with Vbulletin? I have a "logout" button, but no "login" button.

My point is that when I set up vbulletin, I didnt know that my wife or kid was going to HAVE to use my name to post if they use the same computer. This dont even make sense to me!

Any help would be appreciated, I know there has to be a way around it.

you can't login under a different user until the current user logs out. you need to logout, then you will see a username and password field to login.

2 Users 1 Computer

I am new to vBulletin, licensed v. 2.2.8, www.danelen.com, and set as Adminstrator. When I log out, I only get a click here to log back in screen. Do my users get a different screen? The problem is two users using one computer. When one user logs out do they see a different log in screen or just a "click here" to log back in, which may be for the incorrect user? What is the best way to test the forums without being set as an Adminstrator and seeing everything? I thought I had permissions set properly but went to my computer store and found that an unregistered user could see everything.

It sounds like you have the Unregistered group permission for 'Can view board' set to 'No'.

Sounds like or looks like? I did set unregistered to "no", yesterday. My main questions are how do I best inform two users using one computer? What is the best way to test my forums without going to another computer?

With this set to 'No' you are seeing the forums exactly like an Unregistered or Non-logged in guest would. If you want to see what it looks like to a regular member, just set up a test account for the 'Registered' user group and log in under that account.

Wouldn't I need to disable cookies, because each time I went to the site it would recognize me as the Administrator and not a plain registered user. When I log out as an Administrator I only get a "click here" to log back in, I don't get a log back in as a different user.

No. I have several test accounts on my forums and I've never had to worry about cookies.

I set up a test account. Logged out as administrator and did not click on "click here" to log back in. I just did a forum jump. Vb immediately recognized me as the Administrator and didn't give me a chance to log in as my test account user. Now what? Also, I want to hide the member list from unregistered users but want it available to registered user. Do I check "no" to allow users to view a list of registered users and (optionally) search through it. If so, shouldn't that option read allow (unregistered) users to view a list of registered users and (optionally) search through it?

I just did my own test, checking "no" totally disables the member list and that is not what I want. I also want to hide the calendar from unregistered guests but not from registered users. Can this be done?

I do this all the time without a problem. The only time logout doesn't work correctly is when the cookies are corrupted.

Try manually deleting the cookies for your forum. To do this with IE 6.0:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Temporary Internet Files -> Settings -> View Files

Then search for the individual cookies for your domain and delete them all. The name should be in the form of:

Cookie:[email protected]
and
Cookie:[email protected]www.yoursite.com

...and any derivatives of the above. Then highlight the individual cookies and delete each one found. After this, close all browser windows and restart IE.

I use Netscape 7.0 but followed your advice regarding the cookies. That solved the problem. I can now switch back and forth between user names. Thanks for being here.

Now that I've killed the members list viewing for everyone, (which I really don't want to do), I was still able to get a member list. All I had to do was click on "forum leaders" and there was everyone nicely laid out for the world to see (which I don't want). Tell me this is going to be improved (notice I didn't say fixed) in vb3 and I'll either edit the templates or live with this until the release.

Additionally I don't like the "currently active users" because I can click on them and get personal information about my users even though I'm not logged in. Tell me this gets resolved in vb3 and I'll go to bed for the night.

You can turn both of these off:

1. Admin CP -> User Groups -> Modify -> [edit] -> Viewable on Show Groups? -> No

2. Admin CP -> vBulletin Options -> Who's Online -> Enable Who's Online -> No

You can also set 'Can view members info' and 'Can View Who's Online' to 'No' in the User Group permissions.

I don't think that helps with guests viewing my users information from the home page. I don't even want guests viewing my users profiles even if they get a "not logged in" error message when they try to send them a PM or email.
