What are the downsides of completely removing references to the sessionhash in the templates? From what I understand, it is only used if the user doesn't accept cookies and also is behind a proxy, at which point vB needs another way to track the user.

actually cookies should be used if the person is behind a proxy / cache server as it usually attempts to cache the page url's thats why some people can end up with mixed up logins because the cache server caches the url with the sessionid.

So the main reason is for people without cookies, if it was removed they wouldn't be able to stay logged in.

In other words, if I "force" all my members to use cookies automatically in my forum settings and tell them to switch it on in their browsers, then sessionhash would not be needed. Correct?
