    It's a pain to try to switch later...

    the switching itself is ok... but all links from outside will suddenly be broken.

    The coding within them is identical, so a .php3 should work on any host, as most hosts will parse .php3 and .php extensions, some even do .phtml

    They are almost the same the only diffence is instead of .php the replace the location of all the files called to .php3. The reason why they do this is some web host only support .php3 and not .php call.
