how can I change my path to avatars?

I'm having problems with hotlinking, and using htaccess to protect the directory has caused other problems.

Is there a way I can change the path to my avatars and other images, and have it reflected in the current posts?

If the URLs are hardcoded into the posts, then no. AFAIK the only way to do this would be to use htaccess.
