Auto login isn't working 2.2.6

Setting up a new board. v2.2.6, MySQL 3.2?, and php 4.2.1.

Some users have to sign in many times to place a single post. Some users have to login each time they come back to the board. I'm not having this problem with any other vBb's anywhere. I'm also not having this problem on a couple phpBB's that are on my server. It's only with vB 2.2.6.

Is there a known problem for this? I'm looking to move about 1000 members to this from ezboard, but the login snafu is stopping it.

This could a be the appearance of a known issue with php 4.2.1 and apache 2.

Try adding

define('USE_COOKIE_WORKAROUND', 1); 

to your config.php file and upload it again.

Also check in your user control panel in options that you have
Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies) set to Yes

and

Browse board with cookies? set to yes

I looked thru the bugreports and didn't see another thread talking about this. Where else should I look for known bugs?

The bug is with php and not vBulletin and not many people are using the latest php with apache 2 so it hasnt occured with that many users.

Is this isolated to Apache 2 or does it also affect the 1.x.x versions?

Users are prompted to continually login when reading or posting to private forums.

Is this happening with all users or just some users?

Can you place this in a file called phpinfo.php and upload it your forums an dpost the url here.

Would there be any harm in trying this with php 4.0.3? (I don't know php at all). I thought my problem was with an AOL user but it turns out the non-AOL users thought they were doing something wrong and are just now getting around to saying somethign.

For now I'm going to turn cookies off.
