Search Index Rebuild

How long (about) do you think it would take to rebuild my search index, its currently 5.5 million rows in the database.

The server is (linux) AMD Duron 1ghz with 1gb of ram


I have never rebuilt a search index, on my forums. Is there a chance it will (timeout) and I will never be able to create it again. I dont want to clear it out , then not have it create the new one.

it can take a while to rebuild the index depending on how many posts you have. my forums have ~68,000 posts and it takes me about 5 minutes to rebuild (IIRC). you can set the number of threads to do per cycle so it won't time out.

is it necessary to use the vb CP to rebuild the searchindex?

or may I start the process by night using a crone-job?
