  • Private Messaging Woes

    Hi,

I just installed vB 2.5.5 and am experiencing a few problems. The most urgent being the fact that when members send a PM, it just hangs and times out. I've turned off the email function to no avail. Can anyone help? Here is a link to my phpinfo file:

Any help would be appreciated. Once I get this one tasken care of, I have a couple other problems to run by you. For now, I'd like to concentrate on this one though.

    Thanks!

Does posting work okay? Is it possible to get a URL to your forums? Thanks!

        Cary,

Posting has worked fine since I disabled email. However, previously, posting replies would usuallly result in server timeout. Is there a better (newer) version of PHP I should get? Might this be the problem? As I said, I have other problems as well (can't upload files or avatars.) I'm completely new to PHP and mySQL. Therefore - I'm on a steep learning curve. Again - many thanks for whatever help anyone can render.

          Prohacker,

The PM function is enabled. I never disabled it.

          Thanks!

You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Perhaps you can't access PM because you didn't reply to the email when you registered (you probably didn't get the email.) I tried registering as a new user and the process hung where the email normally gets sent. I set up SMTP on my server according to the instructions at http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...threadid=36060 to no avail.

The latest version of PHP is 4.2.1, its also better to run it as an ISAPI module instead of a php binary.

Have you tried setting a valid smtp server name?

Thanks. I'll try the newer version of php. I set up smtp according to the instructions referenced above. I'm not sure if this constitutes a valid smtp server name. Thanks for your help.

OK - tried all suggestions. Upgraded to PHP 4.2.1, reconfigured everything, and everything is as it was before. Email still does not work. Any other suggestions?

Negative. However, this morning - without making any further changes - the email functions are working. Therefore, I don't know exactly what fixed this problem. But, something did. It just took the server resting overnight <<insert Twilight Zone music here>> On to the next problem... I'll make a new post since it is unrelated to this thread's subject. Thanks to all who helped!
