  • Timeout for Cookie - how does it work?

In the admin CP, there is a setting for Timeout for Cookie. Will it help with an issue i'm having where a registered user visits the board, doesn't look at any threads, leaves, comes back later and now all the threads are marked read?

    Thanks,
    Matt

The cookie determines how long those threads will be kept as UN-read.

Increasing the time on it will allow those threads to stay un-read for longer.

Then is there any relationship between this value, when a thread becomes 'read', and when the user actually visits the thread?

      Two examples:

1)Value is set to 30 minutes, user comes to the forum home page at 3:00, never reads the new thread, and leaves before 30 minutes - is the thread still marked as read if he comes back after 3:30?

2)Value is set to 30 minutes, user comes to the forum home page at 3:00, visits that new thread at 3:05. Is the thread marked as 'read', or still unread until 3:30?

        1) is more-or-less correct except it will be marked UN-read anytime before 3.30. If he visits the board then 30 mins will start all over again with the threads still UN-read although he may have read it.

I hope that clears it up for you.

That is the way it currently works and is intended to work.

So what you're saying essentially, is don't bother visiting unless you've time to read everything of intrest to you, because we can't keep tabs on more than when you visited last. Following that, the cookie is only usefull when actually using a board, not for keeping tabs on what's read or not between sessions.

All in all, that's not just a little ugly, but I do realize why it's done this way.

It's that or have a row for every thread for every user...you do the math...
