There are not many attachments as I had to turn off the attachments soon after installing VBulletin. There are quite a few photos etc linked from elsewhere and of course there are some avatars (no more than 20 though).

to be honest the guy probably thinks what he is saying is true but just dosen't know how to do a dump. Even if it was a big database with 500MB of attachments it wouldn't take more than 5 minutes to do the dump.

Ask your ex host why they can't just run the comman from telnet

mysqldump -uroot -p databasename > /home/somewhere/sql.sql

and then email it to you (or let you ftp it)

it would take them less time than responding to one of your emails.

if they don't reply in a reasonable amount of time it might be worth mentioning that a rather large userbase is awaiting the outcome of what happens.

You are also well within your rights to talk to your credit card company but i imagine getting your domain name sorted is a higher priority as well. (you should be able to do this yourself, if they registered it in your name.. possibly doubtfull).. go to www.truewhois.com and type it in and see who registered it and then go to that website and follow details there for changing the details.

I registered a new domain name as Supanames were being such a pain in the ass over it.

The files are still with them and they want £15 (about $30) before they will give me them. According to them its such a huge size that their server kept timing out and they have to get a specialist in to be able to do anything. I did forward some of these comments on but they conveniently forgot to mention it and just repeated what they said before. My new host offered to use telnet (or something like that) to go in and get them for me for free but they don’t allow that.

I guess I have no option but to pay it.

I would not trust that database dump that they're supposedly going to give you for $30. As Freddie says it sounds like they are using a script instead of doing it properly and therefore you may find the dump to be corrupt.

As bad as it sounds you may wish to just start over clean.
