New posts feature not working

I have set up VB to allow searches in the control panel but not in the permissions for user group "registered users".

This is to allow moderators to use the search facility but not everyone else.

However I want all users to be able to list the "new posts" - but when they try - they get the usual "You do not have permission to access the page that you were trying to" error from VB.

How can I let them see recent posts without having access to the full search engine?

You'll need to move the "cansearch" checks to specific actions rather than a global check -- I think the main actions you want are intro and simplesearch.

It's not possible without hacking -- our search on/off switch is a global switch. The above gives the basic idea of what has to be done.

This is the code that is used to disable searches:

Perhaps you might add this granularity to the next version?

Also showing the "new posts" link when they can't use it is not that great.

Searching is very powerful but on shared servers it needed to be rationed, however listing recent posts is a must.

Perhaps "recent posts" could be maintained in a seperate table to avoid the need to perform a search to find them, as this must be one of the most frequently used features on any site.
