issue with newthread/postreply message icon

when my users go to post a new thread or reply, most of them leave the message icon at "no icon". however when the post actually shows up it uses an icon, which is NOT what i want, i'd like it to have NO icon, unless a user chooses to use one.

i cant provide a url because its a private board, however upon request, i will gladly provide the vB developers with my liscense info.

Admin CP > Edit Options > and change the option about whether you want the default icon to show.
