      Access denied for user:

Ok I went into the config file, 'persistant connections' was already set to "off". Over the last 12 hours I've received
      over 200 error messages.

The most likely cause of this error is that the info in your config.php file is wrong or your db user does not have full permissions to this database. Please read this for all the known causes of this error:

Thanks Steve, I did all that you suggest and still can't
          open the forum.

          A question:
My hosts says the database folder name is "xclnews"
when it, the database stuff is really one folder down
          at /big/dom/xclnews/urtu/?

Could this effect operation with a incomplete path?

Those are all the known causes of the 'access denied' error. If it's not one of those then it's an unknown issue that has never popped up before and I have no idea what that would be. Sorry.

P.S. I doubt the db user is really named: [email protected]

              Thanks.
Who is the database user, me the owner or some ?? for anybody that use the forums?

I take it that you have not created a database and database user then. Here is our online documentation for creating a new database and db user:

                http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/create_database

                And from the MySQL site:

                http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/CREATE_DATABASE.html

                  Here is the line:
// technical email address - any error messages will be emailed here
                  $technicalemail = "[email protected]";

Should I rewrite it like this?

                  "[email protected]@clnews.org"

True, I had one of your persons install the vbulletin a few years ago, and have hardly a clue about mysql etc.

All i did was make some errors in the command to back up the data base and now I am in over my head.

Please reread post #8 and for instructions on creating a db user and database.

I discovered that there are two config files one at

                        Index of: /big/dom/xclnews/www/forums/admin

                        and another at

                        Index of: /big/dom/xclnews/urtu/admin

I have only one discussion forum!

This was a mistake that happened at the time of the orginal installation.

Anyhow, when I corrected the password at the correct config file everything turned out well.

I want to thank you for your help,
                        Cheers,
                        Tony
