DSNless? Or do you mean DNSless? All DNS does is resolve domain names to IP addresses. A DNSless connection simply means that instead of typing in http://www.domain.com/ to get to a website you would instead type in that site's IP address (if you know it). Something like http://192.168.1.1/ .

I just started learning about host files on older networks without DNS. I'm not sure if this would be an option or not... just thinking out loud again.

DSN equals DATA SYSTEM NAME and is used in Windows ADO and ODBC connections to a datasource.

PHP has native connection routines for MySQL built in so you get a fast direct connection. You do not need a DSN or ODBC to connect to the database as long as the webserver has a clear path to the database server.

you should be able to run it, but your host is using an older version of PHP that may not be able to take full advantage of the features available and they are running an old Alpha version of mySQL.

              this is a Win2k server? or NT4?

I don't think it was that old, but I can't get into your site to check again. And PHP doesnt' report your MySQL version -- it reports the client version (IIRC) which isn't the same as the daemon version.
