I want less icons available on new posts, but ...... how to preserve old posts?

I have about 30 icons and 30 smilies available on my board.
Now I want let available there only the 14 standard icon and 11 smilies that come with vB.
How can I do with the old posts that used the old icons? Is there a way of letting old icons showing on old posts?

Smilies won't be an issue as they are stored as text and parsed when displayed.

However you may get some broken images for the icons. The easiest solution is probably to run this query via phpMyAdmin:

UPDATE thread SET iconid='1' WHERE iconid>'14'
