consequences of changing template names?

I'd like to mark each template that is a html page (with < html. and < /html> at the beginning and end) and mark all the templates that are bits to ther pages. Perhaps using an asteric or an x or a z.

If I change their names, does that mean I have to change every instance where the template is called? or are the names simply for convienence?

IF you change the names you would have to change all the code. They are called by name throughout the system.
