Limiting number of posts by new users?

My regular members are demanding that I throttle the number of posts / day a new user (less than a month or two weeks) can make.

Our forum is a humor forum and we get a new user every now and then who posts dozens of jokes / day to get to the higher levels of status.

Any ideas on how this could be done?

When they call newreply or newthread check $bbuserinfo[joindate] to see if they are < 30 days old. If so then run a query on post asking for the count of messages that the user had made in the last 24 hours. If not acceptable then deny them access.

I assume adding this somewhere in the begining of newthread.php and newreply.php would do the job?
