vB 2.3.2 400+ users runs slow

I have a duel 3ghz machine with 2 gigs of ram running vB and when we reach 400 to 500 simultaneous users it really drags. I have looked at cpu usage and it goes up and down, but roughly stays at around 50-60%, using around 300 megs of memory. I still get timeout errors quite often when I have this many users. I have plenty of bandwidth. Is vB3 more efficient with resources or is there a setting I can change that will improve the speed?

I believe vB3 will be more efficient but I don't know how much of a difference it will make in your case. For help with optimizing your server, please see this thread:
