  • Gzip rate question

How % compression has the gzip 1 setting ?
I thought about setting mine to 3 but I heard freddie recomending to set gzip to 1, and would like to know the % compression we should expect with each gzip level.

    THanks,

I would keep it at 1.... you should be able to get at least 50% compression with that.

It's a level of diminising returns after that.... pretty good compression with almost no CPU time, or a little more compression at the expense of alot more CPU time.

Feed your pages through the form on this site with gzip turned off and you can see:

            On the question of gZip...

What products or sites are using this besides vBulletin?

I am trying to push this through at SitePoint but PHPBuilder said the ob_gzhandler has memory leaks so they are leary of vBulletin's implementation. So I need proof of its usefulness.
