Some users can log in but not post

Hmm, this is getting serious during the last days.

I've got several emails from new users telling me they got their password, logged in (successfully) but when they wanted to start a new thread, the system answers this "You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page." nonsense.

I checked the users account myself (I am able to post on my board for months now, cookies ok, etc. etc.), and had the same result.

So I have a lot of new users which leave the board immediately again because they cannot post.
This needs to be adressed urgentl, I am sure this is no userside bug.

Eva, yep sure.
One user mailed me his details, he was permitted to post by vB, but when I logged in with his account data, I got the error message myself.

I am really afraid now that those people emailing me were not the first ones being locked out by vB.

You can count on it that there were plenty who never emailed you....This has been my experience.

I wonder if this is a cookies problem. I had an account on this hosts machine on their ubb, and then signed up a new account when they switched to vbulletin.

The users are even able to modify their profile, but they cannot post!

I asked some of the unfortunate users to erase their cookies and reregister... it didn't help.

Some did not mail back, so they have left the forum already...

This is completely unacceptable to me.

I have send in a support request to Jelsoft since I am registered customer.

I HOPE someone there will reply.

Could you give us a few details about the set up of vBulletin, in particular:
- Have you selected 'Confirm email address in registration' option, and if so, are the users clicking on it?
- What user group are the offending users in? To find out, do a search for the user in the control panel, click the [edit] link next to his/her name and then look at the usergroup field? Is it 'registered users'?
- You say that your cookies are working fine for yourself, so I guess that it is not that. It is probably worth checking what you have got the cookiepath variable set to. What is it set to at the moment?

There are a few thoughts to get you started...

Also, ordinarily, if you want priority support, you should use our support system (as you have done now).

K, first of all, thanks for your reply, John. I am really concerned about this issue.

- Yes, email confirmation ist active, and works smooth. I get around 30-50 new registrations each day, and ~ 75% start posting right away.

- Usergroup is "registered". I got some "awaiting email confirmation", but only ~ 40 people.

OK, so those who are complaining that they cannot post, they are in the 'Registered' user group?

If so, when the user types in their password at the login prompt, do they get anywhere?

I have just signed up on your forums and did not experience any such problems.

Yes, the complaining users were in the registered group, so nothing wrong there.

When typing in their account, they were told "You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page." and return to the start page.

It sounds like a cookie problem to me, but probably not userside.

And yes, many people are able to sign in and post with no problems, and I am happy with that.
Just the few bad apples :) aren't, and it makes me wonder why.

BTW: Is there a timeout for email-confirmation? Or will the system wait eternally for a user to confirm his email?

I had the same problem happen on my board. I went and looked at thier account in the control panel and saw everything looked normal. I clicked submit when i was done, and his account worked fine after that.

I've encountered my first bug :(

I think it is something like this. New users are unable to log in correctly. It will show them as logged in, as well as when I browse the session table with phpMyAdmin. But they still see the login boxes, and receive the "You are not logged in" stuff.

I attempted the same username/password on my test 1.1.4 board, and it worked, so I upgraded my live forums to 1.1.4, but it still didn't work.

I'm not sure if this is similar to the problem being discussed or not.
