Make sure you are running 5.6.1 PL1 as a security patch was released a couple of weeks ago.
Then attempt to reset your admin password via email again. This should work. If it doesn't please tell us what error is seen when trying to login via the front end.

If you still cannot log in, you can restore admin access using tools.php to elevate an ordinary user to admin and then use that user to reset your normal admin account. Then demote the new user again.

        1) Register a new user normally with an unused email address.
        2) Upload /core/install
        3) Upload tools.php in your do_not_upload directory to /core/admincp
        4) Run /core/admincp/tools.php in your browser and enter your customer number
        5) Click the link to create the administrator.
        6) Enter the username you want to elevate.
        7) Submit the form.
        8) Log in with the new administrator
        9) Use this account to set a new password for your normal administrtaor
        10) Log in with the normal administrator to verify this now works
        11) Demote the new administrtaor back to registered user
        12) Delete /core/admincp/tools.php
        13) Delete /core/install

As regards searching using email addresses, this works fine on my 5.6.1 installation. Please check that your URL settings are correct in AdminCP > Settings > Options
