  • Admin should be able to see all users private messages

    Hi,

I suggest building an option so admin can see all private messages that are sent by users to other users, and also another option that the admin can turn on is to receive a copy of each private message sent by users to other users as well.

This will help prevent spam and abusive messages being sent, it will help so the admin can catch it before the users read it.

Let me know what you think.

    Thanks.

If administrators can read it then it's not a private message. I think that opens up a lot of potential issues including legal liability for some forums. There have been third party modifications for this in the past but many administrators consider it unethical even if not illegal. You'd have to disclose that administrators can read private messages which would discourage users from using them at all. They would simply find other ways to communicate.

It would be legal if it’s listed in the site terms and privacy policy.

FB and other platforms have the ability to do this.

If you have database access, you would have access to read private messages. We do not encrypt the databases at this time. Providing an AdminCP Interface feature is something that that we have decided to omit at this time. Our efforts are simply focused on other things. This decision may change in the future.

You're welcome to have a third-party developer add this to your site.

I think site Administrators have a legitimate right, if not an obligation, to be able to read private messages to guard against users using the system to conduct illegal activities such as exchanging child pornography.

I have the following in my forum rules:
Any data transmitted using the site software may be scanned for content, captured and viewed by a site administrator; this includes the personal messaging (PM)system. All the site rules apply to the PM system. Any member using the site for illegal purposes, or breaching the site rules via the PM system will/may be banned. The Personal Message (PM) system is called Personal only in that messages are not posted to the public forums

BTW the term "Private Message" is no longer used on most social media platforms, such as Twitter & Facebook. They're now called Direct Messages perhaps to remove the expectation of privacy.
