Implementing Disqus as an alternative comment system for Articles & Blogs\

Disqus http://disqus.com/ is one of the greatest comment plugins that has so many benefits, many are:

    1. Social features and interacting with different sites which uses disqus as well. So you have a tool to greatly promote your site and content among other sites
    2. It gives you the option to generate revenue through ads displayed on your disqus which is a +1
    3. It has a set of unique commenting features and functionality which makes discussions more fun and easy.
    4. It is fast and displays live comments the moment they appear without needing to refresh the page.

Popular sites like IGN http://www.ign.com/ and Askmen http://www.askmen.com/ use it within their articles because they know it is fun and easy to use, and members love it.

    Example http://www.nihonomaru.com/news/2/fre...swim-anime:-pv

Many of Disqus' features would take very long time to implement on VB 5.x, the proper approach would be to allow through admincp to integrate the Disqus plugin within may be, i see the most appropriate places for this would be (Articles and Blogs) This will shine these two sections of the VB 5.x

    What we need:

    1. The ability to easily integrate and choose Disqus as an alternative for the comment system within Articles and Blogs instead of using VB 5.x main comment system.

    2. You can use Disqus to show the # of comments for each Article or Blog. I've done it on my site. See link below on how to.

Well, still discussing it since it was marked "Resolved" . I hope they reopen it.

Kevin: This is better suited as a 3rd party add on. If a template hook is needed to make that work we will add one.

Katie: Hi Kevin, Can you actually explore partnering with Disqus? You guys did it with Vigilink but with Disqus it will bring Vbulletin much more success and attention if you can make this deal. Disqus also works very nicely under blogs and articles. Vbulletin comment system won't meet Disqus features and a Disqus alternative is always great.

By partnering, I mean Disqus is free but if you want to use the single sign on feature + other premium features, it needs a subscription to their plan. Single sign on feature like IGN uses, it helped IGN through the API i think to use their site + their XF login + Disqus to use one account accross their system instead of creating a separate account on Disqus to use it.

Do you still want to explore this instead of marking it "Resolved" ? Do you see the potentials it will bring to Vbulletin under blogs and articles? Officially supporting it and partnering as well will open the gate to better opportunities, it will also promote Vbulletin as well - there are so many benefits for this if it is done right.

Speaking personally - I would not want to see Disqus implemented in the core software. If I'm running any sort of discussion community, I want full and absolute control and ownership of all comments, posts, replies, everything.

That is an alternative option not a replacement. And you can do all of these through disqus admin panel i.e., complete moderation and better i think in term of spam prevention.

So those who wants to use VB comment system they can, those who like to use Disqus, they can. Like i said, it works great for Articles and Blogs, not other areas, you also get to promote your content well with Disqus and connect it with other sites similar to your niche. VB doesn't do any of this.

Viglink isn't a competitor with vBulletin. Disqus is. Why would we want to integrate a competitor into our software?

That is a big word. They aren't a forum software, they provide a comment system to be used within articles and blogs. You can't use Disqus if you don't have articles or blogs. Also, a potential partnership will increase the popularity of Vbulletin and add more to its functionality.

How do you see it competing with Vbulletin ? Disqus needs articles and blogs in order for you to use it.

I'd rather see any time spent on this, improving the software to meet what you want out of disqus

Can't honetsly see the point of writing a bespoke comments system for the software (as we have done), then spending a huge amount of development time implementing an alternative option of some third party product to do the exact same thing.

But they are not on my server, and I have absolutely no doubt that somewhere in the terms and consition I don't own the rights to the posts either.

Sorry but I really don't see any benefit in having two systems to do the same thing. Users of a site should be using whatever system is built into the site they visit.

There's also a question of image. Whenever I see Disqus on a website I think "oh, you couldn't be bothered to use a proper commenting system. Not a serious player then".

I don't see it that way, well then i guess VB needs to improve their comment system to be similar to Disqus for blogs and articles. Also something VB doesn't bring is the fact that with Disqus you can connect your site content and how it within your Disqus, it also helps you connect with others and others from different sites + the fact that it provides you with a good seo system among other sites.

I agree with this opinion. The comments system of vB5 isn't what comes to my mind in the first place, when I think about improvements that are needed in this software...

I think my response to this would have to be - why would I want it to be similar Disqus? Whenever I've seen Disqus in use it's been awful, clunky, and not really looking remotely integrated with the site.

One of the huge benefits of vBulletin has always been that its core posting functionality - be it threads, posts, comments, replies or whatever - has always been fully self contained. If you're going to charge customers a premium price for a premium product, and then tell them the comment system uses a free, branded third party plug in, I personally would be asking questions.

Which highlights another issue, I don't want Disqus branding all over my site.

Don't want to sound harsh and you've made some fantastic suggestions for the product that I hope get added one day....just that this isn't one of them.

Well, lets just get the other ideas implemented properly and we can worry about this as a 3rd party addon i guess :0) But the other Jira's i send, I really hope they can be shown sometime this year as front-end features, it will give some life to VB 5.x and with the pages loading fast, VB 5.x will be back in shape for great attention.

I hope they don't keep continuing on working on the current versions of the Blogs/Articles/Groups, they really need these Jira redesign ideas which brings a set of unique features and each works differently. For the profile pages, the improvements doesn't involve major redesign, more like new functions and upgrades.
