install/install.php doesn't exist?

Dev environment:
Windows 10 Home
PHP8
Latest versions Apache and MariaDB
vBulletin 5.6.4

For the first time in 5 or 6 years I'm installing vBulletin. Lots of changes in vB5. :-)

To test, I'm installing on my local machine, and the instructions say to enter this URL: .../forums/install/install.php

But in actuality the correct URL is .../forums/core/install/install.php

I adjusted the URL for installation, but got a ton of errors during the process.

Did I get a borked download or something?

I'm not sure where you found that information but if you post a link I'm sure Wayne Luke or someone else might be able to correct it if necessary.

The installation path is always root/core/install/install.php with vBulletin 5

It's in the vb5readme.html file that comes with the download package.

The .htaccess file has a redirect from install to core/install so in theory you should be able to simply call install/install.php.

RewriteRule ^install/ core/install/ [NC,L]

If your .htaccess file isn't being processed, you're going to end up with all kinds of other problems as well.

This is because you don't have mod_rewrite enabled, don't have Allowoverride ALL in your httpd configuration, or you haven't renamed the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess.

The installation scripts of vBulletin 5.6.4 are not compatible with PHP 8. You will need to use PHP 7.4.X.

The information is correct and accurate on a properly provisioned server and following the steps in the readme file provided with the software. It is set by design because we do not want people accessing the contents of /core directly. Doing so can cause problems with the software over the long term.

Makes perfect sense. I did say "if necessary" because, quite frankly, I have never used the readme file or even looked at it.

Thanks Wayne. Guess I was rushing through the install and not paying enough attention. My bad! I feel like I'm starting all over again with 5.x, being away so many years, etc. Good to see you're still here. 👍 😊

I rolled back to PHP 7. Better off anyway, since Microsoft announced they're pulling support for 8.

The pulled support just means that Microsoft won't be providing compiled builds of PHP for use on Windows. With WSL and third-party builds, this shouldn't be an issue for anyone running vBulletin.
