[Bug / Issue] MySQL server has gone away

Hey, just recieving several times the SQL Error:

MySQL Error : MySQL server has gone away
Error Number : 2006


Talked to my host and received the following answer:

"through your website our MySQL server is "spammed" with invalid logins, which produces the described error.
Unfortunately we can't identify which script is causing these logins. But it could be the unprotected function "Login or Register" directly on your start page."


Any idea what could cause this issue?

Someone is hitting your site with a DOS attack. It is the only thing I can think of. Check the IP Addresses that the requests are coming from and block them via the server's (or better yet, router's) firewall.
