  • Exporting message content

    Good evening,

I am looking at switching hosting providers. Although I've done a complete export of my current MySQL database, I'd like to back up the messages separately in case there is an issue moving to the new platform, so I can at least provide the messages in an archive table for reference.

    So the questions would be:

    1) Which table(s) would I need to export from in the current environment?
    2) Which tables(s) would I need to import into in the new environment?
    3) What format would the export need to be in?

If this is not a practical approach, please advise. Thanks.

There is no way to back up messages separately from other content.

To move to a new host you need to:
    1. Create a complete SQL backup of your database. All tables are necessary.
    2. Restore this backup on the new hosting provider's server.
    3. Edit the /core/includes/config.php file to connect to the newly restored database.
    4. Upload the vBulletin files to your server.

If you store attachments and custom avatars in the file system, you need to upload these directories as well and update vBulletin to find the new locations as well.

OK, thanks. I was afraid of that.

Is there a recommended format for export, i.e. SQL or CSV, and should the tables be exported individually? I can't do the typical dump type backup based on restrictions from my host.

A full database backup should be done in SQL including table structures. It is easier to restore if you include all tables and their data in a single file.

If you can't make the database backup with mysqldump, the host should provide one to you or provide a means to create the backup.
