  • Password Reset - Invalid Server Response

    Hello there!

    I've been working with a client that has some development needs on their vBulletin 5.X website. I recently upgraded their platform to the latest version (5.6.2), and I quickly identified an error post-upgrade related to the password reset function. I've been monitoring the php error log, httpd error log, httpd access log, and mysql error log with every attempt. Though the frontend would display the error to the enduser, the system logs weren't displaying any errors. I enabled debug mode, and did a trace on the AJAX request just to see what the outgoing call & response looked like. The outgoing call returned a 200, and the response was NULL which is normal for that function. I'll spare you the details of the remaining troubleshooting, which included a fresh installation of 5.6.2 (where the error also occured).

    Finally I decided to come to vBulletin.com, and attempt a password reset here (since you're running 5.6.2). I signed up a new account (since I can't recall which email I used for my account from 2002), and attempted a password reset here. It turns out that I received the very same error here! I've attached a screenshot as proof, and blurred out the email address for obvious reasons. Normally I'd attach all of my logs and whatnot, but I think that you can quickly replicate the error here on the site.

    Please advise if there is anything I can do to help in having this resolved.

    Side Note: If anyone is able to assist in recovering my very, very old account here, I'd love to walk down memory lane by reading my old messages. My username is Bahawolf (https://forum.vbulletin.com/member/22703-bahawolf), and I was quite active back in the day. Working extensively with vBulletin was one of the many reasons that I became interested in web development at a very young age. At the very least, I appreciate seeing the icon that I always had so much respect for, still kicking and doing well.

    I checked this on my website. The described error appears when I try to reset the password.

      What version of PHP are you using?

      What is the output of the attached PHP file? Upload it to your vBulletin directory and load it in your web browser like any other page.

        Hi Wayne,

        The version that I'm currently running on this environment is 7.4.2. I also 7.3.9, and 7.2.22. The output of the file as per your request is...:

        Current PHP version: 7.4.2

        Array ( [0] => 2y [1] => argon2i [2] => argon2id )
        Just a couple more notes on this, as it may be helpful for you to know.

        - Though the error is displayed, the email for the password reset does go out to the end user (and the reset link works).
        - This actively occurs on vBulletin.com (this site) upon trying a password reset.

        Thanks!

            Please send an email to [email protected]. They will be able to verify your identity and then updates to the user accounts can be made.
